What does the law state?

UK tyre law penalises those who drive with damaged or worn tyres, to protect all road users. A legal tyre is one that:

• Is compatible with the other tyres fitted to the vehicle
• Does not have any lumps, bulges or tears caused by separation or partial failure of the structure
• Is free from cuts or tears greater than 25mm, or ten percent of the sectional width of the tyre (whichever is greater) and which is deep enough to reach the ply or cord
• Has no ply or cord exposed
